RECESS
RECESS amplifies existing events run by our community’s dedicated organizers and non-profits. We bring teen workers, food, games, a DJ to partner events - instead of creating our own events. RECESS is about everybody helping everybody, and the energy is electric⚡️.
Summer 2021 - Summer 2023
RECESS began as a free, four week, middle school festival of play and learning to address the isolation and social emotional learning loss of our young people during the pandemic.
A broad, city-wide team made RECESS possible. RECESS was created and funded by: the Mayor; the Deputy Superintendent of Schools; the City Manager; the Assistant City Manager for Human Services; the Commissioner of the the Dept. of Public Works. It was co-designed and brought to life by a team of teenage co-designers supported by dedicated community members and youth workers.
